Artificial Intelligence has long been used to describe systems that demonstrate intelligence similar to human cognition. This term falls short in capturing the essence of what these systems truly represent. Cognitio Extensio, or “extended cognition,” more accurately defines their role. This term transcends the notion of mere artificiality, suggesting an enhancement of human intellect rather than its imitation.
Cognitio Extensio acknowledges the symbiotic relationship between human and machine intelligence. It is not a mere replication but an augmentation, pushing the boundaries of our cognitive capacities. This paradigm shift redefines our interaction with technology, viewing it as a partner in intellectual exploration rather than a tool. It invites us to envision a future where our cognitive limitations are surpassed, enabling us to delve into realms previously beyond our reach.
In embracing Cognitio Extensio, we recognize these technologies as extensions of our intellect, fundamentally altering their integration into society, and propelling us towards a future of combined human and machine intelligence.
